Water Water in China is heavily contaminated with animal and human waste that exceeds the applicable maximum permissible levels, diarrhea diseases and viral hepatitis, both associated with fecal pollution of water, are the leading infectious diseases in China. Tap water, although already treated, may not be safe. Whenever possible bring bottled water with you. Locals only drink water that has been boiled. Avoid iced water in restaurants; try a soft drink or tea instead. Locals also don't eat anything that is not thoroughly cooked, such as Salad. If you buy fresh fruits, wash with tap water (tap water is cleaner) and peel off skin if possible. Theft Pocket-picking and theft are the most common crimes in China. Tourists are easy targets. Don't assume if there are many people around it will be safe. Chinese are so used to petty crimes they usually will not try to help or call police. Leave valuables at home. Never leave anything unguarded. Don't keep all cash in one pocket. Don't keep wallet in rear pocket. Don't keep valuables in backpack. Backpack can be easily sliced open with a knife and you will not feel it. Keep your purse in front of you. If you lose something that is really valuable to you, please don't hesitate to call police.
